What do I do?

I come from a background of general practice, but in recent years my work has focused on business law (acquisitions, sales and financing), property law, property development and estate planning, trusts and asset management. I like that mix of work because it involves constant contact with my clients, sharing with them the major decisions in their lives, enjoying the triumphs and helping them through the inevitable trials of life.

What do I enjoy about what I do?

Quite simply, people. I enjoy being in touch with people, helping them to plan and putting into words the deals they make and the strategies they form. I love the opportunity to make the law work for my clients and to produce new and creative plans and solutions.

What have I done in the past?

I have been a lawyer all my adult life. I have been a partner in larger firms, but missed the direct contact with my clients and have been much happier in a small environment working with a team who share my values and gain the same satisfaction as I do from the success of my clients.

What do I do outside my work?

When I was in sole practice there wasn't much time for other things, but I took every opportunity I could to travel. I love learning new things and I couple that with one of my other great interests, photography. I also enjoy reading and, as many of my clients know, have had a love of cricket since my boyhood. I also like keeping fit, going to the gym, cycling and jogging. That allows me to indulge my passion for good food and New Zealand wine without feeling too guilty.

What would I do if I wasn't a lawyer?

I think I would probably be a photographer. But maybe I would own a small bookshop and hope that customers never came in so that I could just devour the books myself.
